DECEMBER 2 - 5, 2022 (FRI - MON)

Topic: Wild/Western Herbs and Classical Chinese Medicine:

Classically, Chinese medicine used primarily local ingredients. This allowed the use of plants that had adapted specifically to the environmental challenges that were local to the patient. In modern times, Chinese medicine has become centralized and much of it is farmed ... being grown in ideal conditions and losing some of the potency and resilience traditionally found in wild herbs. These herbs are not only shipped across China but across the world, to areas where the plants are not indigenous. In this weekend, Jeffrey will be returning to the roots of classical herbal medicine and review ways in which we can effectively utilize local herbs within a Classical Chinese medicine paradigm. More specifically, Jeffrey will explore the expansion of the Chinese medicine herbal pharmacopia to include Western herbs, that are local to many of the practitioners in the West. In doing so, Jeffrey will review tastes, temperatures, channel affinities, properties, recommended dosages and safety guidelines to allow Chinese medicine practitioners to seamlessly incorporate Western herbal medicines into the framework of Classical Chinese medicine.

Transform Your Practice: Master Chronic Pain and Sports Medicine through Chinese Medicine

Pain relief. Injury recovery. Performance optimization.

Arguably, the most common reason for office visits in contemporary acupuncture practices is pain—often chronic pain. Whether it stems from injury, surgery, neuropathy, inflammation, or autoimmune conditions, chronic pain can be a frustrating and stubborn challenge, resistant to conventional treatments and often leading patients down a path of increasing reliance on pain medication with potentially dangerous side effects. While chronic pain management involves a range of strategies, including lifestyle changes, physical manipulation, medications, and psychological approaches, Chinese medicine offers additional perspectives on the nature of pain and strategies to address such suffering.

This class will explore various methods to work with chronic pain within the framework of Chinese medicine and unravel the complexities of chronicity. In this cutting-edge course, discover how the ancient wisdom of Chinese medicine provides fresh, effective solutions. We’ll explore the full spectrum of chronic pain management techniques and equip you with actionable strategies that go beyond what Western medicine can offer.

Chronic Pain Management

Dive into time-honored Chinese medicine approaches, uncovering the root causes of chronicity and innovative ways to address persistent pain. Learn how to reduce your patients' dependence on medications while providing lasting, non-invasive relief.

Sports Medicine Mastery

Rooted in centuries of athletic and warrior/military care, Chinese sports medicine offers unparalleled insights into healing and preventing injuries incurred during competitions and combat. Often categorized under the specialty of Wai Ke (External Medicine), this course will cover essential techniques such as bone-setting, chiropractic adjustments, therapeutic massage, and the strategic use of herbal plasters and liniments.

Additionally, the tradition offers approaches to training specific sinews and joints, pre- and post-workout care, and proper mechanics. Depending on the sport or physical activity, fitness criteria are utilized to foster strength, increase stamina, and minimize injuries that can result in severe muscle fatigue, joint degeneration, and subsequent bi-obstruction issues, as often seen in conventional approaches. More importantly, Chinese sports medicine provides sound, time-tested techniques for maximizing physical potential, helping athletes build resilient, strong bodies that are relatively pain-free and injury-resistant. Discover how to optimize physical performance, minimize injury risk, and promote recovery through proper sinew and joint training, both pre- and post-workout.

Key Topics:

  • Surface anatomy and treatment strategies in Wai Ke (External Medicine)

  • Effective use of body form and sinew function

  • Treating common sports injuries with ancient and modern techniques

  • Comprehensive pre- and post-workout care to boost stamina and reduce injury

  • Corrective exercises for long-term rehabilitation and recovery

  • Integrating acupuncture, herbs, oils, and stones into your practice for holistic healing

Whether you’re treating chronic pain or helping athletes reach their peak performance, this course will equip you with the essential tools and knowledge to transform your practice—and improve your patients’ lives.
